MONTHLY FOIBLES

...wherein we discuss what did and didn’t work for us this month…

Moss - I’ve had more attempted installations either not run at all or fail due to not being able to write boot. I think the problem is that it is seeing the USB stick as sda instead of sdb, so it doesn’t want to write boot to sdb1 no matter what I do, or another possibility is that the distro being attempted does not use - or see - UEFI. I have, however, been able to fill up all usable partitions on both my machines, although as usual what is on which partition may change at any time.......More

MONTHLY FOIBLES

...wherein we discuss what did and didn’t work for us this month…

Moss - I completely restructured both my machines, with a 1 Tb SSD in the desktop and a 512 Gb SSD in the laptop, only to have my desktop short its power supply. Replacement and repair is in the works. I’ve also managed to bring my Raspberry Pi 4 online running Ubuntu MATE 20.04, and thought I had everything working fine but then the VPN wouldn’t load correctly. So now I have a new VPN. And then I accidentally blew out the power supply on my desktop......MORE

MONTHLY FOIBLES

...wherein we discuss what did and didn’t work for us this month…

Moss Lots of things both worked and didn’t work for me this month. I’m saving some of them for later in the show. One thing that didn’t work is that we didn’t get the huge influx of reviewable distros that was expected, except for Mint 20. openSUSE finally arrived, but not in time to be evaluated this episode...More

I’ve been playing with lots of distros, and you’ll probably want to hear my review of the new multiboot system called Ventoy, available on Windows and Linux, which will be part of Episode 337.5 of mintCast, available as a podcast on June 23rd. Ventoy allows me to put as many distros on a single USB stick as will fit, and can also let you format a stick such that you can make changes in the distro and keep them saved on the stick You can also save other files and apps on the stick.........MORE

I’m having an interesting time with Grub and EFI boot. I’m trying to figure this out,
with a ton of help from our wonderful listeners, and will probably be reporting on this
in Episode 333 of mintCast if I can get enough information to do a
decent job.....More

...wherein we discuss what did and didn’t work for us this month…

Moss - I installed OpenMandriva 4.1 on my Kudu along with Feren OS and Ubuntu Budgie 19.10, and MX 19.1 on my Galago Pro to join the myriad of co-residents on that machine. I was pleased by the work MX did on their Grub menu; it isn’t “beautiful”, but it is well thought out and easy to read. As I had extra time this episode,......more
